I have just been reflecting on one of those “ahah” moments.
I was sitting in an airport business lounge, sipping on my cup of tea, waiting for my flight.
The room was buzzing with energy and animated conversation, the furious tapping of many keyboards, the astringent tones of varied ring signals, and the inevitable last-boarding announcements.
The majority of conversations were freely voiced, without the slightest attempt for concealment, and they made for scintillating entertainment for yours truly – as my usual source of amusement had a flat battery (my iPad!).
All the conversations I heard were work related – the report on the meeting, the date of the next meeting, a budget issue, the stress of travel and so on.
Imagine, I thought, if we were all told that this was our last ten minutes to live. A horrible thought, but picture the room; envisage how the dialogue would change. Family and loved ones would become the focus, of course. The conversation would turn to emotion, feelings, and love. I don’t mean to get all gooey now, but it is true.
Work is important, I love my work, but the learning for me from this “ahah” moment is to remind myself live in the present more often. I know it is true,
I just need a prod now and again.
Perhaps these words may be helpful to others who also love their work, sometimes to the detriment of other important elements in life. Live in the present. The time is now.
